How to personalize your engagement session

One of the biggest reasons why I take so much pride in my engagement sessions, is because I always make sure to get to know my couple. Although I love getting that perfect shot, my biggest question after you book is.. WHAT MAKES THEM..”THEM”? Ya know? I will send you a questionnaire after booking, so I can get to know you and your partner even more, AND figure out what would work best for an engagement session.

I truly believe that your engagement session should feel like a date, and if you want it to, strike a memory. For example, Ashley and Nathan love going out and seeing the city together, so we decided to go to the library for a part of their engagement session. It truly felt magical and we got some amazing beautiful engagement photographs!

When you are thinking about where to have your engagement session, think of these questions.

What hobbies do we like to do together?

What is a funny/romantic story that we have together?

Are you more of a nature couple or more homebody?

I send this all in my questionnaire, but this way you can understand what activities or stories you have together, that can help you create a super personalized engagement session for you and your partner!

Another way to personalize your engagement session, is to bring props to your session! Doing things like taking photographs of each other on a film camera, or bringing a blanket to cozy up in can really make your images unique to you as well as pop on camera!!

Here are some other good prop examples to use to personalize your engagement session:

  • hats
  • animals such as; dogs, horses, etc.
  • jewelry
  • matching shoes
  • bandanas
  • a car
  • flowers
  • books

And their is so much more! It’s more than likely that if you go to your photographer with an idea, they are going to have so much fun with it! I have had plenty of couples ask if something was a good idea, and with my guidance it’s turned into something epic! Remember that yes we are the professionals, but these are also your engagement photographs! You deserve everything you’ve ever dreamed of out of your photographs because this is your moment as a couple. Don’t be shy to ask to try something different and get advice from your photographer. If you’ve done the right research and have communicated with your photographer, nothing should stop you from having the engagement session of your dreams!

Planning your engagement session doesn’t have to be hard, in fact, it should be super easy! If you take a minute to think about what you and your partner like to do together, you could possibly come up with your location and your outfits in under a couple minutes! For example, let’s say you and your partner like to go bowling on Friday nights and have a drink or two, or three…lololol. BAM, we have a location, the bowling alley! So what do you normally wear? Ripped shorts and a cute graphic tee? And your partner the same? CHECK! You can also make it more of a classier look with a more white/black bridal engagement dress, and your partner could wear black or something more dressier! BUT I tend to always tell my couples, never where something that you don’t normally wear!

But this way you have your location that is 1. SUPER fun and unique 2. Personalized to you and your partner!
